This Is Where the Stories Take Place.
Akord and Poklad,
Places That Have Atmosphere and Style
Do you know that feeling, when you enter a building and you
feel really good there? That it pulses with positive energy, that
you find yourself in a place where many stories have unfolded?
And that you want to add your own to them? Or do you instead
remember situations that you have already experienced there?
We are talking about the culture centres in Ostrava-Zábřeh and
Ostrava-Poruba, which have a 60-year history and have become
modern cultural institutions with the evocative names Akord and
Poklad. We asked the managing director of AKORD & POKLAD,
Darina Daňková, what was happening there.

Recently we talked about all your
plans for this year. How are your plans
coming along?
I strongly believe that covid restrictions
are a thing of the past. All the big
projects are already behind us or they
are in the final stages of preparation.
The phenomenal Folkový kolotoč
(Folk Carousel), the food festival Velká
žranice (Big Blow-Out), the charity
bike ride Cyklosvětluška, the regional
round of competitions Miss Babča
(Miss Granny) and Štramák roku
(Dandy of the Year), three versions
of the new theatre subscription or
the extraordinary project InspiroHub.
And there is much more.
Akord offers one of the largest venues in
Ostrava. What types of events can you
accommodate there?
The large congress hall is multifunctional
for different events. A tiered auditorium is
discreetly hidden beneath the balcony and
can be slid out when theatre performances,
concerts or graduations are being held
in the hall. If we need a dance floor
then all we have to do is adjust the hall
accordingly. The capacity is 520 seats for
theatrical performances and for balls or
corporate parties, up to 300 people can be
accommodated. Zdeněk Chlopčík‘s dance
lessons have been held here for many years.
I was recently approached at the front desk
by an elderly woman. She told me how much
Akord has changed over time. She told me
that she used to come to Akord as a student,
that her daughter had her wedding there, that
they celebrated her husband‘s jubilee there,
and now she is attending children‘s events
with her granddaughter. I‘m very pleased to
hear about such an experience.
Can we find a similar space in Poruba’s
Poklad?
Poklad has a theatre hall with a capacity
of 400 seats and it has a smaller ballroom,
which is used for balls or corporate
parties. The separate theatre hall has
a great advantage because its layout adds
a certain refinement to the performances.
After a successful renovation, Poklad
attracts many business clients with
its modern style and furnishings. For
example, the Moravian-Silesian Region
and city of Ostrava, Cross Roads and
Ostrava Universities all organise social
and cultural activities here. Looking at
the bookings and reservation system, all
the dates in the large halls of Akord and
Poklad are filling up fast this year. It is clear
that people have a need to see each other
in person and want to hold events in these
types of facilities.
Does it happen that all the spaces are
filled up at once?
It‘s not an exceptional case. In Akord,
5 different business clients can meet in
different rooms and lounges on the same
day. It‘s also not uncommon for one client
to use multiple rooms at the same time.
For example, the Association of Integrative
Coaches has been holding its two-day
conferences for several years in the Music
Hall, three lounges, the Akord Club, while
the attendees use the hotel. Poklad usually
tends to be filled entirely by one organiser.
For example, HRko‘s fall conference will be
held in the theatre and ballroom, the small
stage and the lounges. Our restaurants
provide food services for all events in both
buildings. We offer a comprehensive service
under one roof that is implemented by
a professional team working from the heart,
and I think that it can be seen in our work.
Thank you very much for the interview,
Mrs Daňková.
