Climate change is one of the largest global
challenges we are currently facing, and it
affects all of us. The negative effects of
climate change are a hot topic discussed
not only at the national and supra-national
levels, but at regional and municipal
levels as well. Unfortunately, companies,
municipalities and other subjects often do
not know how to grasp this topic properly
and they lack the information, resources
and capacity to realize appropriate and
effective measures.
This is the reason behind the creation
of the LIFE COALA project, which will
provide cities, municipalities, and private
subjects subjects, within the region,
professional and financial aid. This
support will allow the Moravian-Silesian
region along with all of its related actors
to face climate change and fulfill the
region’s adaptation strategy. LIFE COALA
is only the second integrated project to
ever succeed in the Czech Republic as
part of the LIFE community program.
The Moravian-Silesian region along with
12 other partners will be leading this
endeavor. Other regional agencies such
as MSID, MEC, MSIC and the Ministry of
the Environment, LIFE COALA will also be
backed by the cities of Karviná, Havířov
and Orlová, as well as Báňská University,
the Czech Environmental Partnership
Foundation and the DIAMO state
enterprise. The project’s international
impact is facilitated through the Silesian
Voivodeship and the Głowny Instytut
Górnictwa from Katowice.
Recently, a new web of consultation
centers was launched as part of this
project. Local governing bodies of cities
and other subjects may use these centers
to receive professional guidance in, for
example, maintaining climate conscious
approaches in the management of their
areas, finding optimal solutions for public
spaces, making efficient use of rainwater,
saving energy for buildings, or seeking
funding for specific measures.
The LIFE COALA project will launch a series
of pilot projects within urban areas, which
will include, for example, adjustment of
public spaces, the construction of a water
tank or a model of an environmentally-
friendly building adaptation. Furthermore,
the project will also give rise to a series of
events, seminars and mutual experience
sharing between cities and other
institutions that are part of the Moravian-
Silesian Climate Alliance (MSKA).
Currently, the region is working on
designing a regional information network
aimed at concentrating useful information
regarding climate change and making it
available to those who are interested.
