mentally impaired individuals and opted to replace
it with pseudo family housing providing a similar
environment to typical families. Clients now live in
13 newly constructed modern housing units spread
throughout the city. The investment cost of 350 million
crowns was largely covered through European funding.
The social workers that take care of the clients essentially
gained a “second household.” This was a revolutionary
step in the development of care for these people.
In contrast with the situation 30 years ago, we have now
covered the entire requested spectrum of social care
providing complete and high quality care in cooperation
with non-government non-profit organisations.
politics. The goal is creating optimal conditions to
stabalize families, which provides them with a strong
motivation to live in Ostrava, and allows them to thrive.
High priority prerequisites in this endeavor include
maintaining a safe and clean environment, securing
high quality housing and employment, providing
accessible education, well-functioning services and
a wide selection of free time activities. Supporting
families in need as well as organisations that are
devoted to community activities are also important
steps in the process.
Towards the end of 2021 a SOCIOPOINT, point of
first contact, was opened on the premises of the town
hall. What was the thought behind opening it here?
We recognized the need for a universal consultation
point which would provide aid to anyone who was
placed into social distress for any reason. From such
services as reviewing benefit options, to issues with
not being able to pay for rent or energy, to problems
with debts, foreclosures and more. Those that visit
are often unaware of the help that they are entitled
to receive, which can lead to their problem having
a realistic solution. The professionally funded
employees of the SOCIOPOINT can give these
individuals free qualified consultations regarding
whom and how to contact in order to recieve
aid. I must also add that these services have been
received very positively and have helped many
people in their time of need.

What challenges are you preparing to face
in the near future?
One of our goals is increasing the capacity of
Ostrava’s retirement homes from 2100 to 2500
within the next 5 years, which should cover our
future needs.
Focusing on support options in the construction
of quality barrier-free apartments is also key.
According to an analysis, their deficit in Ostrava
exceeds 4 thousand apartments. The goal is to
allow senior citizens to live out their lives from their
homes with the help of field social services.
