in Moravian-Silesian Healthcare
Even though we often hear complaints surrounding long waiting times at doctors’ offices
and comments regarding the poor state of our healthcare system, these assessments are
not entirely accurate. The Czech healthcare system is among the highest ranked in Europe.
According to an analysis of Czechia’s prosperity index, domestic healthcare ranks third in
the European Union. In comparison with other European countries, Czechia also boasts 5th
place in healthcare availability, a higher number of hospital beds, and even one of the strongest
cybersecurity protection systems worldwide. One facet where we are lacking, however, is
the health of Czech citizens themselves. One of the main culprits of this is an overall unhealthy
lifestyle, leading to high rates of obesity.
The Moravian-Silesian region is a perfect
example of the availability and quality of
healthcare in the Czech Republic. This
can be attributed to the region’s dense
web of hospitals and other medical
facilities, and constant investment
into the purchasing and upgrading of
equipment. In the past couple of years,
billions of crowns were invested not only
into regional hospitals, but to state and
private ones as well. The Faculty Hospital
of Ostrava received the largest share of
these investments. Annually, this hospital
receives around half a billion crowns
in investments. Last year, this money
was used to fund the construction of
a new pavilion focused on psychiatric
care, which ended up costing around
350 million crowns. Regional healthcare
facilities were not left behind either, as
innovations took place all over the region.
The Silesian hospital in Opava received
new insulation and further reconstruction
is planned for other pavilions. A new unit
focused on the treatment of persistent
vegetative states has been constructed
at the medical institution in Albrechtice
and new orthopedic surgical rooms will
be constructed at the hospital in Karviná.
New x-ray machines are being purchased
in Orlová and Bruntál, and the hospital in
Krnov will soon get to make use of a new
sciagraph. All of these are investments
worth dozens of million of crowns. Private
healthcare facilities are also seeing growth.
The Karviná Miners Hospital, for example,
has invested into constructing a new three
story building, purchased an MRI machine
and is planning further investment into
equipment and IT technologies.
Domestic as well as foreign pharmaceutical
and healthcare companies both have
strong presences in the Moravian-Silesian
region. One of the largest companies
in this category is Mölnlycke, a Swedish
company that operates two factories
in the region, producing surgical tools
and a variety of other products used in
treating wounds. The Israeli company
Teva is operating out of Opava, producing
generic medicine. Other influential
medicine producers in the region include
IMCoPharma or WALMARK. Start-ups
are also making a large contribution to
our healthcare system, and recently, they
have begun seeing great success within
our region. The company Invent Medical
is a perfect example of this. They focus
on order-made 3D printed prosthetic
and orthotic devices. Currently, they
also have partners in over 30 countries
around the world. This is by far not the
only innovative company in the rregion
and soon we will also be hearing from
companies such as H2 Global Group
(using hydrogen in medicine), Viderai
(detection of vision impairment), or
Madmonq (nutritional supplements).
