REGION OSTRAVA
i pro veřejnost, která si od klubů může
tato zařízení pronajímat. To si myslím,
že se razantně změnilo oproti minulým
volebním obdobím. Kluby využívají i prostředky z Ministerstva školství, takže tím
do Ostravy přináší další volné finanční
prostředky.
Jako druhou zásadní změnu bych ráda
zmínila celkové zjednodušení systému
dotací a digitalizace dotací ve sportu. Kluby už nemusí dokládat hromady papírů.
O dotace si může požádat jakýkoliv klub
a vyhodnocujeme je především ve směru
členské základny a počtu dětí, se kterými
pracují. Proces je tedy mnohem jednodušší
a transparentnější.
Závěrem rozhovoru bych se chtěla
zeptat, jaký sport vy osobně máte
nejraději a jestli sama využíváte nějaká
OSTRAVA—City of Sport
Andrea Hoffmannová currently serves as the deputy Mayor for Education and Sport in Ostrava
and Chairwoman of the club of councillors in Poruba. She talked to us about the achievements in
the field of sport in Ostrava and what is planned for the future for both kids and top athletes.
Ostrava hosts a number of major sporting
events, be it the Ice Hockey World
Championship, the Golden Spike or the
European Volleyball Championship. What
do you see as being Ostrava‘s greatest
potential and what plans does the city
have for the future in the field of sport?
The fact that these events take place here is
just proof that Ostrava is a city of sport, has
excellent infrastructure and can serve such
great things. But the organisation of these
big events is not only about the stadiums;
it’s also about the people who work there.
And, according to the feedback I get from
organisers, we also have the best fans.
Almost every month there is a major event.
This is good both for the economy of
Ostrava and for the entertainment of people
from Ostrava and the surrounding area.
We have excellent teams here in Ostrava—
we are national champions in baseball, third
in women‘s handball, and we have excellent
hockey and football teams. So we definitely
want to maintain, if not improve, that level
of top sport. But at the same time, of course,
we want to support amateur clubs and
focus on working with children—we want
to provide them with both financial support
and sports facilities.
together with the Association of School
Sports Clubs. Children form teams at school
and they compete against each other in
various sports. Over the course of the year,
the children try about ten to twelve sports
with the participation of prominent athletes.
I believe that it further motivates them to
play sports outside of school.
Before the pandemic, more than 6,500
children in Ostrava took part in this project,
so I think that if you present sports to
children right, they will be interested.
Do you succeed in motivating children
to play sports? Are today‘s children still
interested in sport, or do they prefer
modern technology?
I would not be that negative. I can see that
the number of children who do sport in
Ostrava clubs is growing every year. I also
very much welcome the sport activities that
are organised in schools.
For example, we organise the Ostrava
Sports Games, which is a project we run
It is obvious that the sports environment
in Ostrava is well and stably organized
and financed. What step or decision have
you taken during your time in office that
you are happiest about? Is there anything
that you would highlight?
Ostrava supports the reconstruction of club
facilities. Having a sports background is
the most important thing—not only for the
clubs, but also for the public who can rent
these facilities from the clubs. I think that
What principles does Ostrava use to
invest in its sport infrastructure?
In Ostrava we invest primarily in sports
grounds near schools, because these
grounds are not only economical but also
practically the most usable—in the morning
for children, in the afternoon for clubs and
in the evening for the public. We support
all sports across the spectrum: the city
helped renovate the facilities for the Arrows
baseball team and are now preparing the
first home field for American football for
the Ostrava Steelers in Ostrava-Poruba. We
are also building smaller sports halls near
schools in the districts so that people don‘t
have to travel far for sports.
has changed dramatically in comparison to
previous terms. These clubs also use funds
from the Ministry of Education, therefore it
brings additional free funds to Ostrava.
The second major change I would like to
mention is the overall simplification of the
subsidy system and the digitalization of
subsidies in sport. Clubs no longer have to
submit piles of paperwork. Any club can
apply for subsidies and we evaluate them
primarily in terms of membership and the
number of children they work with. Thus the
process is much simpler and transparent.
To conclude the interview, I would like to
ask you what is your personal favourite
sport and if you yourself use any local
sports facilities?
I try to do sports recreationally. I live in
Poruba, so I use, as an example, the new
Oher track for running. I go swimming at
Sareza and also go to ‘Cementárna’ for
roller skating.
I also like being a spectator. I like watching
floorball and volleyball. I try to visit our clubs
and see how they are doing.
I would like to wish the Ostrava clubs well,
because only now in September will we see
what COVID has done. I hope that they will
overcome this crisis, endure and that they
will motivate their members to play sports
again.
Mrs Hoffmannová, thank you for the
interview.
