Semiconductors Are Indispensable

Let‘s begin by introducing your

multinational corporation and its

involvement in the Czech Republic.

We operate in two locations - Rožnov pod

Radhoštěm and Brno and we have a total

of 2,200 employees. In Brno, we have

a design centre for automotive applications

such as sensors and autonomous

control elements. In Rožnov, we have

a design centre for power electronics

for automotive applications, as well as for

other applications in industrial, consumer

or communication electronics. Each

of our development centres employs

over 200 highly qualiﬁed engineers.

The production lines in Rožnov include

in-house research and development

departments for new technologies

for the production of semiconductor

materials and components. Currently our

portfolio includes 650 different types

of chips. The new silicon carbide wafer

manufacturing technology is the result

of our semiconductor materials R&D

group, and the world‘s most signiﬁcant

achievement is the innovation of the key

silicon carbide wafer cutting technology.

Previously, the TESLA brand existed

in Rožnov. Can you provide for us an

evolution of time from then to now?

In 1993, we started cooperating with

Motorola. Initially, it was a small portfolio

which our experienced team built and

developed taking it to a world-class

technical level. We were able to transfer

projects from Japan, France and the USA to

Rožnov, while expanding our own portfolio

of circuits that were taken over from

the former TESLA. We have grown to our

current level producing chips for hundreds

of different semiconductor circuits. We

also have our own technologies which

enable us to achieve the best parameters

in the world. You will ﬁnd chips from

Rožnov not only in automobiles and

common home electronics, but also in

aerospace technology and in some of

the most demanding scientiﬁc projects. In

the production of silicon wafers, we have

expanded our capacity so that we supply

60 % of the material to our parent company.

You produce 10 million chips per day,

but there are reports of ongoing supply

shortages. What factors contribute to

this situation?

Primarily it is the rapidly growing

automotive industry, particularly in the

development of new systems for electric

cars, that has signiﬁcantly increased

the demand for chips, sometimes up to

ten times greater. Additionally, there are

industrial applications such as robotics,

which is a global trend. The use of chips

is also prevalent in solar and wind power

plants, as well as in communication

networks and the roll-out of 5G. New

challenges will then certainly arise

from the rapidly expanding artiﬁcial

intelligence, presenting further demands

for chip technology.

The world is asking for chips. They are in almost all electronic devices today and modern society cannot

funcon without them. Onsemi in Rožnov pod Radhoštěm has used the potenal of the former TESLA,

supported its own research and development of new technologies by using corporate know-how, and

in recent years, has made billion-dollar investments in the producon of semiconductor materials and

components. Ten million chips a day are produced here and there is potenal to signicantly increase

the producon. Aleš Cáb, onsemi‘s Vice President for manufacturing in Rožnov, spoke about a lot of

interesng things during an interview with the chairman of the editorial board, Radúz Mácha.

Máte smělé investiční plány, ale chce

to peníze, kvaliﬁkovanou pracovní

sílu, moderní soﬁstikovaná řešení,

technickou infrastrukturu apod.

Vyrovnáte se s tím vším?

V posledních dvou letech jsme investova-

li 400 milionů dolarů do oblasti výzkumu,

vývoje a výroby leštěných desek karbidu

křemíku a desek s epitaxními vrstvami.

Získali jsme sebevědomí, že naše způ-

sobilost pro budování polovodičové in-

frastruktury je na světové úrovni. Víme,

že budeme potřebovat kvaliﬁkované

zaměstnance, proto na přípravě talentů

dlouhodobě spolupracujeme s VŠ, ale

budeme muset více spolupracovat i se

SŠ. Naše vize a strategie míří více než pět

let dopředu.

Nicméně – jsme v Rožnově pod

Radhoštěm, což je relativně malé město

se 16 000 obyvateli. Máte nějakou

představu o spolupráci s vedením města?

Náš záměr jsme prezentovali městu hned

po oznámení, že ta investice může směřo-

vat právě sem, a dohodli jsme se, že spo-

lečně vytvoříme pracovní skupinu, která

bude řešit různé s tím související aspekty,

a měla by sloužit i ke spolupráci s širším

regionem – Zlínským nebo Moravskoslez-

ským krajem. Plánujeme pokračovat v na-

šich projektech v průmyslovém areálu bý-

valé Tesly Rožnov, který se od roku 1949

postupně rozrůstal, až byl v roce 1989 po

částech rozprodán. My chceme v areálu

využít dlouhodobě zanedbávané prostory

a snažíme se ho celkově pozvednout na

moderní industriální úroveň v architekto-

nických řešeních a s doplněním o zeleň.

Rozhodně nehodláme nic budovat na

„zelené louce“, ale jsme schopni vše rea-

lizovat v rámci stávajícího průmyslového

areálu. Šetříme přitom životní prostředí

a můžeme tak být městu tím nejlepším

partnerem.
