BUSINESS
Veolia is preparing a pilot project for
hydrogen production in the Moravian-
Silesian Region. Can you explain what
the project is about?
This is a project in Frýdek-Místek. We
will install a two megawatt electrolyser
in the heating plant powered by green
electricity produced from biomass and
photovoltaics. It is the only hydrogen
project in the Czech Republic that
has succeeded in an international
comparison. And it is the first ever to
receive a subsidy from the EU Innovation
Fund to support clean technologies.
The hydrogen produced will be used to
power buses in the Moravian-Silesian
Region. In addition, the region is also
planning to purchase hydrogen trains for
some lines, for example from Krnov to
Olomouc.
There is not enough green hydrogen,
so we decided to go for it and plan to
produce hydrogen in other places as well.
You are entering a new era in the Czech
energy sector and have started
offering electricity and gas supplies
to households and retail customers.
What led you to do this?
The market has been cleared and prices
have reached an acceptable level where
competition can develop. We have been
one of the top players in the energy
market for more than a decade. We bet
on being an energy leader with a clear
long-term vision, a strong international
background, state-of-the-art technology
and teams of experienced professionals.
We also have the advantage of having
our own power generation in our thermal
power plants. People are increasingly
concerned about who supplies their
energy and under what conditions. We
believe that as an experienced, strong
and stable supplier we are best placed to
