The Automotive Industry as a Strategic Specialisation Domain for the Moravian-Silesian Region

We are currently facing one of the most complicated
situations the Czech automotive industry has ever
seen. The covid crisis brought deficiencies in the
global distribution market to light and for a long time
we faced shortages of key electrical components
while energy and material costs skyrocketed. War
in Europe and around the world was no help either.
Inflation increased along with uncertainty and old
paradigms have begun to exit stage. Despite all of
this, the Czech automotive industry has maintained
its competitiveness, adapted to new conditions
and has proven its tenacity in focusing on future
development.
Allow me to name a couple statistics that highlight
the importance of the automotive industry not only
for the Moravian-Silesian region, but Czechia as
a whole. The entirety of the manufacturing industry
makes up 21% of Czechia’s GDP, and the automotive
industry alone makes up 9% of total GDP. 1/3 of
all research and development investments within
industrial fields go towards the automotive branch,
and robotics technologies are in use in half of all
automotive companies, 2/3 of these businesses also
apply various production automation technologies.
The same proportion also have their own research
and development labs. R&D specialists make up
7% of all automotive employees. This shows that
the automotive industry is not a simple assembly
line, but has now become a hub for development
and new ideas. In Czechia, 180 thousand people are
directly employed in the automotive industry. And
if we include related fields, this number rises to 500
thousand. Our region has 88 automotive companies
that employ 34 thousand people.

a.s. in Kopřivnice. We have many great component
and system suppliers within the automotive industry
spanning all supply chain tiers. Our tier 1 suppliers
are especially noteworthy, as they have built excellent
