Thanks to the Family Company Vemat,
Krnov Has its First Industrial Hall
With a Green Roof
Since its foundaon in 1992, VEMAT, a Czech manufacturer of cords, ropes and haberdashery,
has established itself not only as a major player in the texle haberdashery market, but also thanks
to its approach to sustainability. One of the measures is a green roof, which is expected to provide
a beer microclimate inside and in the surrounding area and signicantly less rainwater runo.
The green philosophy is deeply embedded in the company's culture, posioning the company
as a role model in responsible business.
Textile production, green roofs, sustainability
and beekeeping - these key topics are
associated with VEMAT. In 1992, Leopold
Matela founded a small business in his
garage, focusing on the production of cords,
springs, ropes and rubber bands. This humble
beginning laid the foundation for today's
family-owned VEMAT, which has since
become a major market player in its field.
The company's growth has been gradual
and well thought out. In 1997, the purchase
of a larger premises in Brantice was
made, which enabled the expansion of
production. Another important milestone
was the transformation into a limited liability
company in 2002, which brought new
business and organisational opportunities.
In 2004, the family took over the beekeeping
business from their grandfather. Now,
beekeeping has become not only a family
hobby, but also part of the company's
operations, accounting for approximately
15% of its turnover.
In 2007 and 2008, despite the high cost
of construction work and the impending
economic crisis, VEMAT built a new
1000 m² hall. It was this space that allowed
the company to broaden its focus to include
beekeeping supplies with an innovative
design of hives in an "IKEA" style.
The development continued until 2019, when
the process of intergenerational handover
was initiated and the reconstruction of
the warehouse hall began at the same time.
A highlight in the company's development
was the commissioning of the newly built
production hall in Krnov in 2023, further
expanding and modernising the production
capacity.
As part of its commitment to sustainable
business, VEMAT focuses on the use of
renewable energy sources. One of the key
measures is the installation of a photovoltaic
power plant on the roof of its new halls in
Krnov. This covers most of the company's
daily electricity consumption, combining
an economic effect with a reduction in
fossil fuel consumption.
In addition to the use of photovoltaic
energy, VEMAT has adopted other
environmental measures such as the green
roof of their industrial hall. This green roof,
combined with retention hatches around
paved areas and underground tanks, not
only contributes to a better microclimate
inside and around the hall, but also has
a positive impact on rainwater retention.
VEMAT is thus a company that not
only makes a profit, but also takes
the environment into account and
contributes to more sustainable operations
and efficient use of natural resources.
