The story of the Organs for Ostrava is
extraordinary because, in its relatively
short life, it has already occupied
two major spaces. Initially, it was
the Conference Hall of the Palace of
Culture in Prague, where the instrument
was built at the behest of the Communist
Party of Czechoslovakia. After the Velvet
Revolution, the Janáček Philharmonic
Orchestra bought the instrument, and
the organs served well during concerts at
the Ostrava Cultural House.
The Philharmonic decided to sell
the instrument due to a planned
relocation. Fortunately, a buyer was
found – the parish of Moravian Ostrava.
Thus, the first-class instrument remains
in Ostrava. After 140 years since its
foundation, the Ostrava Cathedral of the
Divine Savior can finally have organs that
will pleasantly fill its monumental space
with sound.
"Ostrava, thanks to the organs in the Church
of St. Wenceslas, the planned organs in
Ostrava-Zábřeh, and the cathedral, is
gradually making its way onto the organ
map of the Czech Republic. So far, it has
been somewhat in the shadow of other
cities," says diocesan organologist Jiří
Krátký, placing the planned organ exchange
in the cathedral in a broader context.
Adoptions of pipes and a donation kiosk
in the cathedral are ready.
To achieve this, the Moravian Ostrava
parish needs to raise approximately
27.5 million CZK. For comparison: building
new organs for the cathedral would be four
times more expensive. The parishioners
have been saving since spring. On
the website www.varhanyproostravu.cz,
the adoption of pipes is prepared. Donors
can receive a donation certificate,
a small model of an organ pipe, and for
larger donations, an even more original
souvenir in the form of discarded pipes
from the Palace of Culture, which are
not suitable for the Ostrava cathedral. It
is also possible to contribute to the public
collection account 1388059555/2700.
