Opava Urology Offers Modern Prostate Treatment and Complex Surgery

The Department of Urology’s core programmes include
prostate surgery – HoLEP, uro–oncology, urolithiasis,
the diagnosis and treatment of incontinence,
and participation in clinical trials focusing on prostate
cancer, overactive bladder and incontinence.
Within uro–oncology, prostate cancer is one of our
key areas of focus. Diagnosis includes fusion–guided
prostate biopsy in cooperation with the radiology
department, where magnetic resonance imaging
(MRI) is performed. Surgical treatment includes
radical prostatectomy for prostate cancer, including
pelvic lymphadenectomy, as well as complex kidney
surgery for cancer. In patients with kidney cancer,
we focus primarily on tumours at stages T1–T3,
with an increasing proportion of kidney resections
and laparoscopic procedures.
In the field of urolithiasis, our department performs
a significant number of percutaneous kidney stone
extractions (PCNL), a procedure indicated for large
kidney stones. At present, however, most procedures
are performed using a minimally invasive approach
through the urethra – flexible ureteroscopy. We
primarily use single–use video ureteroscopes, which
reduce the risk of septic complications and increase
the likelihood of successful stone removal.
The Department of Urology comprises a 25–bed
inpaent ward and ve outpaent clinics, including
a urodynamics clinic. The inpaent ward is intended
for paents who require hospitalisaon for surgery
or for serious condions requiring intensive care,
such as parenteral nutrion or pain management.
For paents from a wider catchment area
encompassing the enre Moravian–Silesian
Region as well as parts of the Olomouc and Zlín
Regions, the department oers endoscopic laser
surgery for enlarged prostates using the HoLEP
procedure. At our department, this technique has
now completely replaced open prostate surgery
performed through an incision, signicantly reducing
both recovery me and the length of hospital stay.
