and Complex Surgery
Modern laser treatment for prostate condions, comprehensive care for paents with cancer,
treatment of kidney stones, and the diagnosis and treatment of inconnence – these are among
the main areas of care provided by the Department of Urology at the Moravian–Silesian Hospital
in Opava. Thanks to its specialist experse and modern equipment, the department provides
specialised care for paents from Opava and the wider surrounding area.
Urology Outpatient Clinics
The department provides basic examinations
and treatment for urology patients on an outpatient
basis, as well as the diagnosis of urological conditions
and their pharmacological treatment. The outpatient
clinics also prepare patients for surgery in coordination
with other departments, including radiology, nuclear
medicine, internal medicine, geriatrics, laboratories
and the anaesthesiology and intensive care (ARO)
clinic.
Outpatient care also includes the long–term follow–
up of cancer patients, patients with urolithiasis
(urinary stones) and patients with incontinence.
Inpatient Department
The inpatient department provides care for patients
requiring hospitalisation for both surgical
and conservative treatment. Conservative treatment
includes pain management, specialised antibiotic
therapy and preparation for surgical procedures.
Hospital admissions for surgery cover a broad range
of procedures, from plastic surgery of the external
genitalia (circumcision, frenuloplasty) to radical
procedures such as scrotectomy, penectomy
and ureterectomy – resection of the ureter. Kidney
surgery includes radical nephrectomy, including
laparoscopic procedures, as well as kidney resections
(with an increasing proportion of laparoscopic
and resection procedures). We also perform open
and laparoscopic ureteral reconstruction and radical
prostatectomy for prostate cancer. For stress
urinary incontinence, we provide comprehensive
outpatient diagnostics, including urodynamic testing
and urogynecological ultrasound of the pelvis, as well
as surgical treatment of incontinence (with experience
in pubovaginal slings, TVT and, currently, primarily
TOT slings).
The Department of Urology has access to central
operating theatres with a full range of surgical
equipment, including laparoscopic equipment.
It also has a dedicated urological endoscopy
theatre for performing endoscopic procedures:
OUTI, TURBT, TURP, URS and PCNL. The theatre
is equipped with a C–arm X–ray system and,
most importantly, a high–power holmium laser
and the latest type of GreenLight laser for prostate
vaporisation. Ultrasound and electrokinetic
lithotripters with attachments for ureterorenoscopy
and percutaneous nephroscopy are also standard
equipment.
