Vriburch – Freiberg or Příbor?

Příbor is one of the oldest towns in northeastern Moravia. It invites visitors to take in its historical

sights and to spend some time in the green town centre.

Příbor was founded by Franco von

Hückeswagen in 1251 as a settlement with

municipal rights. The first written reference

about the town can be found in the charter

of Přemysl Otakar II., who later became king,

from December 12th, 1251, where we can

also find information about the establishment

of the Church of Nativity of St Mary. At the

time of its foundation, the town was named

Vriburch; later it was renamed to Freiberg,

which in Czech became Przybor.

Education is a very important chapter in the

history of the town. The foundation of the

Piarist grammar school in 1694 was a great

contribution in this field. When the Piarists

came to Příbor, it started a huge expansion

of education, and secondary education

became available for pupils from the poorer

groups of the population. The primary parish

school had already existed since 1541. With

the establishment of the Czech Teachers

Institute in 1875, the town became the

centre of education in northeastern Moravia.

The institute produced many important

teachers and experts in education and

culture during its existence, which lasted until

1938.

In 1989, the historical centre of the town was

proclaimed a municipal sight reservation

and as of today it has sixty-four immovable

cultural sights. The revitalization of the

Piarist garden was another important act,

which was completed in 2015. With this, the

demanding nineteen-year-long restoration of

the whole area of the Piarist monastery--the

biggest sight in town--was completed. For

their systematic care of the cultural sights

in its area, Příbor received the “Historické

město roku 2015” (Historical town of 2015)

award in 2016.

Příbor is also the birthplace and place of

engagement of many important people

who made the town famous. Jan Sarkander

lived here together with his mother and

attended the parish school. Antonín Cyril

Stojan worked here for eleven years as

a chaplain in the lower secondary school

and later became the archbishop. Several

famous people were born here: Řehoř

Volný: historian and establisher of Moravian

toponymy; Bonifác Buzek: philosopher and

national revivalist;Sigmund Freud: founder

of psychoanalysis, honorary citizen of Příbor;

academic sculptor František Juraň; author

Josef Kresta, and many more. Among the

important sights of the town we can list the

Church of Nativity of St Mary, the Church of

Saint Valentine, the Church of Saint Cross,

the Church of Saint Francis, Sigmund Freud’s

birthplace, the Piarist monastery and the

Piarist gardens.
