The Moravian-Silesian Region Building of the Year 2019

The Moravian-Silesian Region Building of the Year 2019 The Moravian-Silesian Region Building of the Year contest has for the period of its existence become a prestigious event which evaluates only the best construction projects in the region. This year, the reconstruction of the Müller Villa in Opava took the top spot. The goal of the competition is to highlight great projects, but also to advertise construction companies, designers, engineers, architects, building contractors and their other investors. The judges include the Association of Entrepreneurs in Construction, Czech Chamber of Authorized Engineers and Technicians and Association of Czech Architects-Ostrava and Moravian-Silesian Region branch. Since 2007, when the first season of the annual competition took place, 507 buildings have entered the contest, and 261 of those received awards in specific categories. This year, the 14th year of the competition, fifty interesting constructions were in the running. The Grand Prix was awarded to the Müller Villa in Opava. The major interest of this building comes from the fact that it is the only part of the building that has been preserved from the Liechtenstein baroque palace that was mostly demolished at the end of the 19th century. The method of the building’s reconstruction was decided upon by the National Monument Council, which speaks to the importance of the restoration. “We succeeded in maintaining and restoring as many original features as we could; others were replaced by copies made with historical methods. A section of the city’s medieval fortification, found during an archeological excavation, is also part of the exposition. Furthermore, the architects managed to conduct an equivalent dialogue with history through contemporary means of expression,” said the competition’s chairman, Martin Vilč, to justify the awarding of the prize.
