Revolution on the Railways. Hydrogen Trains Soon on the Line in Ostrava, Krnov and Olomouc

According to the study conducted by
the Railway Administration, the best
alternatives for the Czech railways
are electrification of lines and battery
trains. However, electrification, which
requires high initial costs, is subsequently
the cheapest in operation. Hydrogen
propulsion was operationally more
expensive, with one exception being
the line that connects Ostrava with
Olomouc via Krnov. A project for a large
refuelling station is under construction in
Krnov and trains produced in Studénka
could be refuelled there.
On this line, the construction costs for
hydrogen infrastructure is acceptable.
The Moravian-Silesian Region plans to
order new hydrogen-powered trains
after 2028, which could bring economic
and environmental advantages. The cost
of the new trains are a key factor in this
decision. On the line to Krnov, a hydrogen
train would be the optimal choice. "Where
should one go emission-free other than in
the mountains?" questioned Jakub Unucka,

Deputy Governor of the Moravian-
Silesian Region.The deputy also said that
the region wants all buses and trains that
do not run under the overhead wires to be
powered by hydrogen by 2030.

Hydrogen trains could soon be running on the lines of
the so-called "Jesenická magistrála". The Moravian-Silesian
Region is going to deploy a hydrogen train not only on the line
connecting Ostrava with Olomouc via Krnov, despite the fact that other alternatives are
preferred on most Czech lines, but also on all connecting lines to MoravsBeroun and
Bruntál, including both fast and passenger lines. This choice was supported by the results
of a study which showed that hydrogen offers an economic advantage in addition to
the ecological one.
