The Sawmill in Ostravice is Being Given

a Second Life, This Time as a Center

for Culture and Sports

Many people link Ostravice with beautiful nature,

a gateway to the Beskydy mountains, gorgeous

bike trails, a great golf course and endless hiking

opportunities. This town is the basecamp for around

250 thousand people climbing Lysá mountain each

year, however, it also offers access to multiple other

mountains, the Šance reservoir and other local hotspots.

Ostravice has a rich history. Many famous artists were

born here and back during the first republic, many

successful entrepreneurs and important personalities

from Ostrava decided to build holiday homes and

villas in the area. To this day, these structures serve as

a testament to the area’s prosperity and desirability.

There is a 6.5 hectare plot of land next to the Ostravice

train station that is home to the former Archbishop’s

sawmill which dates back all the way to Austria-

Hungary. In its day, the sawmill had a strong reputation

and was gradually expanded upon until it became

an epicenter of the timber industry and employed

hundreds of people. In 2008 the sawmill processed its

last piece of lumber and it has been left abandoned

ever since. Eventually this local icon became another

unsightly brownfield, a shadow of its former self.

Thanks to its strategic location with great transportation

accessibility, the sawmill has great potential for further

development. If attempts to revive this facility would

be successful, it would bring great development

opportunities to local services, hospitality, business

and trade. The whole area would be reinvigorated to

strive towards prosperity and sustainable development.
