as an Ace up Ostrava’s Sleeve
When the project to convert Ostrava’s historic slaughterhouse reached the nals of the
presgious internaonal architectural compeon, the Mies van der Rohe Award, in 2023, it
aracted signicant media aenon. And rightly so—no Czech building had ever achieved such
recognion before. According to Lucie Baránková Vilamová, Ostrava’s Deputy Mayor for Strategic
Development and Culture, this was no coincidence. The city currently boasts a substanal number
of completed, ongoing, or planned projects that will not only reinforce its posion
on the architectural map of Europe, but also elevate it even further in the future.
