Zdigitalizované snímky slouží i restaurátorům. Naskenovaný snímek je mnohem věrnější než fotografie především v ostrosti a barevnosti předloh. Skenování snižuje i riziko poškození uměleckého díla. In 2017, the Gallery of Fine Arts in Ostrava (Galerie výtvarného umění v Ostravě, GVUO) purchased a Cruse CS 350ST-MS14400-LED scanner to create digital images of works of art. There are only three facilities of this kind in the world. GVUO has so far digitized 4,400 works of art, most of which are paintings and art prints from its own collection, and collections of public institutions. Digitized images then serve restorers because they allow a detailed view of the work similar to the way a microscope does. The scanned image is a more accurate representation of the original than photographs, being more precise in colour and definition. Scanning also reduces the risk of damage to the work: the scanned object is aligned vertically, so it is not necessary to affix it to a horizontal base, and it is exposed only to a very gentle light. Another bonus is the speed: an item can be scanned in under fifteen minutes. The standard price of a scan of this type is about twelve million CZK, but GVUO paid only a third of the price, sharing the cost equally with the Government of the Moravian-Silesian Region. GVUO thus created the Digitization Centre of the Moravian-Silesian Region (Centrum digitalizace Moravskoslezského kraje), serving the gallery as well as Czech cultural institutions and public.
