Six months ago, Nemocnice AGEL Třinec-Podlesí
(AGEL Třinec-Podlesí Hospital) put the first photon-
counting CT scanner in Moravia into operation,
and was installed on the premises of AGEL Ostrava-
Vítkovice Hospital. The investment, exceeding CZK
100 million, has proved fully worthwhile – the device
has already examined more than 400 patients,
and interest continues to grow.
“Over the first six months, the interest shown
by the professional medical community has only
reassured us that choosing this device was the right
decision,” says MUDr. Stanislav Holesz, Head
of Interventional Radiology, and continues: “At this
stage, care is focused exclusively on patients
with cardiovascular conditions, as was declared
from the very beginning. At the same time, we have
established cooperation with AGEL Ostrava-Vítkovice
Hospital, for which we serve as a back-up CT unit
in the event of a temporary outage of their scanner. We
consider mutual support between healthcare facilities
to be entirely natural.
Acute Care Within 48 Hours
A close interdisciplinary collaboration is an essential
part of how the department operates. Bc. Markéta
Mihulová, Lead Radiographer, who is responsible
for the day-to-day running of the unit, describes this
everyday cooperation: “Our work is based on close
communication between radiologists, cardiologists
and radiographers. We discuss every examination
together to ensure the highest possible quality
and diagnostic accuracy.”
Cooperation with cardiologists is particularly crucial
in patients with complex conditions. “Together,
we assess the findings directly at the monitor,
discuss therapeutic approaches and decide on
the patients further treatment. This multidisciplinary
collaboration is a huge advantage for everyone,”
Head of Department Holesz explains, adding that
the average waiting time for an examination is
around 10–14 days, while in acute cases they are able
to examine the patient within 24 to 48 hours.
A Professional Approach from the Very First Minute
The environment in Ostrava-Vítkovice is very pleasant
both for us and for our clients. We have modern
facilities, a spacious waiting area and an examination
room. Everything is equipped to ensure that clients
feel as comfortable as possible here,” explains Lead
Radiographer Bc. Markéta Mihulová, adding: “Clients
also appreciate the professional approach of our staff
and the speed of the examination. The low radiation
dose is another important factor for many of them. On
several occasions, a client has come in feeling anxious
about the examination, but after being reassured
and experiencing the professional approach of our
team, they left with a smile. Those are the moments
that fulfil us and give meaning to our work.”
A 20-Minute Examination, up to 38% Less Radiation,
and 400 Patients in Six Months
During its first six months of operation, the photon-
counting CT unit has recorded impressive results.
