ARCHITEKTURA
Twenty years ago, was there any real interest when
launching the competition?
The competition was initiated by representatives
of the Association of Building Entrepreneurs,
the Architects’ Association and the Czech Chamber
of Authorised Engineers and Technicians, who
in 2005 announced a tender for its organiser.
Following our successful bid, we were approached
to deliver the project and began the preparations.
From the outset, the aim was to create a platform
for presenting and promoting high-quality construction
projects carried out in the Moravian-Silesian Region.
Although the beginnings were not easy
and the competition had no previous tradition to build
on, it gradually proved possible to establish clear
rules, professional evaluation and the involvement
of the Moravian-Silesian Region as organiser
and co-announcer.
What does twenty editions represent in numbers?
Since the ceremonial announcement of the first edition
in 2007, a total of 774 buildings have been entered
into the competition, of which 385 have received
awards and 19 have been granted the Grand Prix title.
Today, the competition is regarded as an important
and respected platform not only within the Moravian-
Silesian Region, but also at the national level, where it
ranks among the most prestigious industry competitions.
Without whose support would the competition not be
what it is today?
The support of partners and prominent figures is crucial
to the competition. We greatly value their long-term
cooperation, which enables its stable development
and a high standard of organisation. The competition is
regularly held under the auspices of the Minister of Industry
and Trade, the Governor of the Moravian-Silesian
Region, statutory cities, and Senators of the Parliament
of the Czech Republic representing the Moravian-Silesian
Region, which underlines its significance and professional
prestige.
Why did you choose cut glass as the award?
We deliberately chose an award in the form of cut
glass – glass is a natural part of modern architecture
and construction, and thus symbolically connects
the competition with its very subject matter.
This original award, based on the competition’s logo
and crafted as a unique piece of cut glass from traditional
glassworks, has been associated with the competition
since its very beginnings. Each one represents an original
artefact, distinguished by its craftsmanship as well as
the individual engraving of the name of the awarded
building.
What will this year’s announcement
of the results look like?
This year’s edition ranks among the record-breaking
ones in terms of the number of submitted projects – we
currently have 56 construction projects registered. Their
professional evaluation is now underway, and we are
preparing the autumn gala evening, which will traditionally
take place in the industrial setting of the Compressor Hall
at Landek Park.
What can visitors look forward to?
The jubilee 20th edition will be held in a more festive spirit,
complemented by a cultural programme, and will offer
space for meeting personalities who have contributed
to the competition’s history.
An integral part of the competition has also become
the publication of anniversary catalogues. Following
the editions marking the 10th and 15th anniversaries,
we are now preparing a catalogue for the 20th
anniversary, which will provide an overview of individual
editions, statistics of submitted projects, and a selection
of representative photographs. The publication will thus
serve not only as a document, but also as a retrospective
of the competition’s development.
Twenty years – what does it mean to you?
Being part of the competition since its very beginning
represents, above all, a long-term commitment to its
