Each year, it generates a total economic impact
of approximately CZK 153 billion and more than CZK
63 billion in added value. Direct employment stands
at around 13,500 people, with nearly 40,000 jobs
linked to the sector overall.
Every crown spent in this industry generates
approximately 2.1 times that value in the economy.
Public Finances
The pharmaceutical industry contributes approximately
CZK 25 billion annually to public budgets.
Main components:
Social security contributions:
~
CZK 9.4 billion
Corporate income tax:
~
CZK 5.4 billion
VAT:
~
CZK 5.0 billion
Personal income tax:
~
CZK 3.9 billion
In addition to revenues, the sector also generates
savings. Clinical trials, where treatment costs are
covered by study sponsors, reduced public healthcare
expenditure by CZK 2.12.2 billion in 2025.
Higher Added Value Than the Industry Average
The share of added value in production
in the pharmaceutical industry reaches approximately
41%, compared to around 32% in the manufacturing
sector on average.
Labour productivity is roughly 64% higher than
the overall economy average. EBITDA margins are
around 26%, placing the sector among the more
profitable industries.
Exports
Pharmaceutical exports reached approximately
CZK 115 billion in 2025, representing around 1.85%
of the Czech Republics total exports.
More than 88% of exports are directed to the European
Union, particularly to Germany, Slovakia and Denmark.
Exports have shown a long-term upward trend.
Research and Development
Research expenditure reaches approximately CZK
1.8 billion annually, while clinical trials conducted
by innovative companies alone exceed CZK 3 billion.
The development of a new medicinal product typically
takes 12 to 15 years, with costs ranging between CZK
50 and 75 billion. Only around 1 in 10,000 molecules
makes it to registration. In 2025, approximately
486 clinical trials were conducted in the Czech Republic.
The Czech Republics Manufacturing Role
in the European Context
The Czech Republic has significant manufacturing
capacity, particularly in the area of generic
and biosimilar medicines. Production is primarily
focused on generics, which account for approximately
73% of the market in the Czech Republic.
Production is strongly export-oriented and integrated
into European supply chains. Domestic manufacturing
covers approximately 20% of medicinal consumption
in the Czech Republic.
Availability of Medicines
Medicine shortages are common in Europe:
89% of hospitals in the EU have experienced
shortages
96% of countries report limited availability
of medicines
In the Czech Republic, shortages were recorded
for approximately 20% of medicines in 2024
Main causes of shortages:
Dependence on global supply chains
Shortages of active pharmaceutical ingredients
Limited manufacturing capacity
Human Capital
The pharmaceutical industry depends on a skilled
workforce. In the Czech Republic, approximately
500 pharmacy students graduate each year, along
with 5,0006,000 graduates from related fields.
The availability of qualified professionals is one of the main
constraints on the sector’s further development.
