Peter Evans is a teacher, a traveller and a founder of the Aid Africa Foundation.

He prepares and runs service learning projects in a rural area of South Africa.

Where do you come from and what is your relationship

to Ostrava?

I am an Australian. Nowadays I live in Adelaide.

In 2010 I emailed the 1st International School of Ostrava

and presented them with an opportunity to take part in

a service learning project.

Why did you decide to cooperate with

1st International School of Ostrava in the past years?

I think as an Australian teacher and with my passion for

global environmental awareness I surprised the school’s

principal. I was impressed with the school’s international

ethos and focus on international mindfulness and their

pedagogical approach.

What is exciting about the region for you?

As I arrived by train in late October, my first impression

was of the people’s friendliness. The city of Ostrava is

vibrant and even the cold did not stop me from taking

a walk through the cosmopolitan streets. The city is

charming, the mountains are stunning. In particular, the

Science and Technology Museum is an experience I will

never forget.

What is your service learning project in South Africa

about?

Our primary objective is to aid and work with rural schools

in rural areas in South Africa. It allows us as individuals to

connect with real people and their ordinary lives.
