Frenštát pod Radhoštěm
in Picturesque Landscape of Moravian-Silesian Beskid
The town of Frenštát pod Radhoštěm is situated right at the foot of Radhošť Mountain. Its strategic
position makes the town with a population of eleven thousand an excellent base for trips to countless
tour destinations all over the region of the Radegast Beskids.
Frenštát pod Radhoštěm is the true
cradle of Czech hiking as this is where, in
1884, the first Czech hiking club, Hikers’
Association (Pohorská jednota) Radhošť,
was established. Frenštát pod Radhoštěm
is closely connected to the famous
sportsman Jiří Raška, a ski-jumper who
won took gold at the Winter Olympics in
Grenoble in 1968, was a world champion
and named the Skier of the Millennium.
The Ski Jump Resort in Horečky, the
educational trail Beskid Heaven (Beskydské
nebe), and the look-out tower on the peak
of Velký Javorník rank among the most
popular and most visited locations of
recent years. Frenštát pod Radhoštěm itself
offers accommodation in one of the best
camping sites in the Czech Republic, an
aquapark, an indoor swimming pool, and
a skating rink. In summer there are many
cultural, sport and social events, some of
which have an international reputation.
Frenštát pod Radhoštěm boasts of
a picturesque square with a dominant
Neo-Renaissance town hall whose tower
provides an astonishing view of the great
range of the Moravian-Silesian Beskid
Mountains. You can see the original statue
of Radegast by Albín Polášek in the foyer
of the town hall (there is a replica of the
legendary statue on Radhošť). Each
visitor should remember to visit the local
museum housing unique expositions
of weaving looms and blueprint textiles,
or an exposition dedicated to migration
from Wallachia to the USA.
