Vitesco Technologies Is Betting on Electrification The Continental Group has spun off Vitesco Technologies in order to fully focus on the booming market of electric vehicles. We spoke to Mr Krishnan, managing director of the Vitesco Technologies plant in Frenštát, about their split from Continental, their new focus on electric vehicles and the importance of automation in production. Text: redakce Foto: Jiří Staněk, Vitesco Technologies Dear Mr Krishnan, could you give us a little bit of an introduction to Vitesco Technologies? What exactly is the focus of the plant in Frenštát pod Radhoštěm? Vitesco Technologies as a brand sounds new, however, we share our legacy with the Continental family as we used to be their Powertrain Division before separation. As part of Continental, we maintained a position as market leaders in powertrain products for decades, being pioneers in electronics and now, as Vitesco Technologies, we are shifting towards the electrification market. Our current portfolio in FST includes ECUs, car keys, body control modules, as well as temperature sensors, however, starting this year, we will be producing components for electric cars. These include battery management systems and cell supervision circuits. On top of that, we will also produce charging units for electric vehicles in the coming years. Frenštát is a key location for electrification in the EU for Vitesco Technologies 52 ǀ POSITIV 4/2021 Vitesco Technologies’ split from Continental is recent. What was the reason behind it? Yes, we spun off from Continental this year. The main reason for this is growth in the electrification market. It is currently seeing a great boom which is inciting a stream of changes within it regarding, for example, rules regulating emissions. This is very demanding on suppliers, so the Continental board decided to make Vitesco Technologies independent, giving us agility in decision making and a tighter grip on the market. You declare yourself to be a modern factory. How far have you progressed in the robotisation of production? Do you think automation is essential for companies to be successful? For perspective, Czechia’s average is around fifteen robots per 1000 employees; our Frenštát plant currently has about fifty and we have plans to increase that to 130 robots per mille by 2025. For us, however, automation does not stop
