structure, and the elected structure is
then awarded accordingly.
The Building of MSR Competition is
an annual event that awards outstanding
construction projects. What value do
you think the competition provides,
and what trends in construction are
most reflected in the winning projects
of the past couple years?
I already discussed some of the benefits
the competition provides when
answering the last question. We want to
present the region’s citizens with a clear
picture of how drastically our region is
changing, what the locals were able to
achieve, and how skilled and brave they
are. We have gotten used to the fact
that the general image of our region
is something that can only change
slowly over time. Many people still
hold skewed views of the environment
we live in and how polluted and dusty
it actually is. Maybe we just have to
be more patient and put more effort
into creating positive news. Something
I believe warrants further consideration,
however, is the view our own citizens
have of the region. We seek to publish
information about interesting structures
that improve the lives of the people
within the Moravian-Silesian Region.
A total of 663 structures have
entered the competition over the last
17 years, and 340 of them received
an award. The finished projects have
become a part of our lives, and their
implementation is often a dream come
true for company directors, councilors,
or sports club owners. Our aim is to
provide the citizens of our region
with comprehensive information
about interesting feats, that essentially
become positive news regarding life
in the region.
I have noticed two significant
trends among the projects. The first
of these trends is the increasing
architectural quality of the structures.
Only a small minority of investors
choose to not involve architects in
their projects, and so even smaller
structures are designed with expertise.
The second trend is the high quality
of the construction of the building itself,
making use of the newest technologies
and materials. Even though prices in the
construction industry have increased,
for which we might look for causes
outside the industry, investors are
unafraid to favor higher quality materials
and cutting edge technologies.
Is there a particular project that has
been awarded in the Building of MSR
Competition that you consider to be an
excellent example of innovation
in construction?
Czech construction directly makes use
of cutting edge technical knowledge.
Construction is a global discipline, and
any new development made globally
quickly makes its way into our projects.
We are experiencing significant progress
in the widespread use of polymers
in construction. Great emphasis is
being placed on anti-corrosive surfaces,
automation is improving the production
of construction materials, and new
structures are packed to the brim with
cables and electronics that ensure
optimal operation of the building.
Construction chemistry has also seen
large development, while new software
systems allow us to remotely operate
and manage structures. Less pressure
is placed on the physical labor involved
in construction projects. It is very
difficult for me to spotlight just a single
submission, though if I had to choose
some of the most interesting from last
years competition, I think I would pick
the new annex of the Karviná Miners
Hospital (in terms of its incredibly short
construction time), the gym in Třinec
(and its use of building information
monitoring in facility management) or
the use of the Havířov railway station
passenger hall as a venue for cultural
and sports activities for the citizens.
You are the technical director
of the Association of Construction
Entrepreneurs. What are
the Associations current goals and what
is your role in reaching them?
Through its existence, the Association
of Construction Entrepreneurs connects
contractors and design companies,
manufacturers and sellers of construction
materials, and schools and companies
involved in construction services. We
strive for a predictable state investment
policy, the creation of long-term
infrastructure planning, favorable
legislation, state housing support,
the development of construction
trade education, further improvement
of higher technical education,
the digitalisation of investment
construction, and decreasing energy
consumption. We are a place that
comments on inter-ministerial reference
proceedings. We are involved
in the operation of the “school” and
“transport” tripartite, and take part
in the meetings of the “large” tripartite
(PS RHSD). We uphold the opinions
of our members in terms of their stance
towards the construction of new nuclear
power plants and modular construction.
We sign higher level collective contracts
for the field of construction as a whole.
We have branch organisations in each
region, which we use to communicate
with regional governments, cities,
towns, schools and other partners. We
organize competitions and open door
days for the wider public.
Mr. Ševčík, thank you for the interview.
