achieve this. I have decided to work intensively
with the mayors of the individual city districts,
because they know their environment best.
Currently, they themselves are already
pointing out "forgotten" plots of land that can
be revitalised, turned into green zones, parks
or places to relax. At the same time, as a city,
we are committed to changing the perception
of public space. In short, not to "merely"
improve the appearance, but also to address
water retention in the landscape, reducing
climate impacts in terms of temperature and
other environmental contexts.
Above all, however, is an overall plan to
complete major projects that have been
talked about for about 20 years but are
at best a work in progress. I am talking about
large areas such as Černá louka, the Ema
heap, Benátky or Bělský les. These could
and should look better. One day I would
like to see them as a complete green belt in
the middle of Ostrava.
In the case of the Bělský les, several
projects have already been successfully
completed and more are planned. Černá
louka should be extended from Silesian
Ostrava, to the beautiful natural scenery
at the confluence of the Lučina and Ostravice
rivers. This will extend the area of the green
heart of Ostrava and we can continue it right
up to Ema. The heap itself then needs to be
modified to make its surroundings look neat
and illuminated.
I am a realist and I know that something like
this is a very long-term project. However,
I plan to prepare it so that my successor can
complete it comfortably.
Waste and recycling. A big
topic, especially in the context
of sustainability. How can Ostrava boast
significant success?
In the prestigious competition " The Ceramic
Bin" we won in the Jumper of the Year
category. The main credit for this award goes to
a completely unique project of an automated
sorting line, which changes the view of sorting
municipal waste. This line for mixed municipal
waste is unparalleled in the Czech Republic.
It allows most of the material to be reused
for energy or material recovery, so that only
around 20 % of it ends up in landfill.
People should, of course, continue to sort
their waste, as this saves both nature and
their own pockets. If waste is not sorted,
it is partially degraded for reuse and must
be landfilled. I would remind you that
governments at the national level are
gradually increasing the landfill rate.
From 2030, a ban on landfilling of mixed
municipal waste will come into force in
the Czech Republic. We are ready now.
We are also planning further steps in this
direction.
Recently, the news about beehives on
the tower of Ostrava's New Town Hall
attracted attention. What led to this
move?
All we had to do was listen to the employees.
In fact, we have several beekeepers
at City Hall who came up with the idea.
The management liked the idea and the result
is over 40,000 bees in 4 hives on the highest
town hall tower in the Czech Republic. This is
good news for biodiversity in the area. After
all, why shouldn't Ostrava be able to make its
own honey?
Thank you for the interview.
In the current era of modern
technology it is possible
to create a 'green-blue'
friendly city with a quality
environment, which will also
have a sustainable and 'clean
industry'.
Ostrava has boasted
a considerable amount
of greenery, which at rst
glance, stands out even in such
a large city.
