Ecologization Will Reduce

2 Emissions in Havířov

and Karviná by

CO

Thanks to long-term ecologization,

Veolia has been successful in reducing

CO2 emissions. Last year alone, the use

of biomass enabled a CO2 reduction

of 168,609 tonnes. And that's just

the beginning. This is the start of a green,

modern and smart heat supply solution

for Havířov and Karviná.

One of the key ecologization projects

in the Moravian-Silesian Region is taking

place at a heating plant located halfway

between Havířov and Karviná, which is

the main source of heat for the citizens

of both towns. What ecologization

projects have already been implemented

and what is planned next? Three years

ago, new technologies were installed

here at a cost of more than a billion CZK,

which significantly reduced nitrogen and

sulphur emissions. The gasification of

the heating plant will be completed in

2023 and a complete shutdown of coal

will be completed by 2026. A multi-fuel

boiler for burning biomass and solid

alternative fuels will be launched within

four years.

Smart heating sources

Departure from coal is the number one

topic in the Moravian-Silesian Region.

What other fuels can be used, specifically

in Havířov and Karviná? Is the solution

both ecological and economically viable

at the same time? ‘The trend is towards

solid alternative fuels (SAF), which are

generated by producing municipal

waste that is no longer recyclable. Using

them for energy is also recommended

by European institutions and is in

80%

line with the ecological strategy of

the circular economy’, comments Jakub

Tobola, Veolia's Commercial Director,

concerning the new trend in the use of

solid alternative fuels in Europe.

The new solution, which includes a range

of innovations and smart technologies,

guarantees further significant reductions

in emissions in the region. Veolia plans to

build the new multi-fuel boiler, which will

provide ecological heating for Havířov

and Karviná by 2026. In addition,

the multi-fuel heat source will help

Havířov meet the legislative obligation

of meaningful use of municipal waste.

A similar ecologization project, which

also helps to stabilise the price of heat in

the region, is also being implemented in

Přerov.

Reduction of CO2 emissions by 80%

within four years

What will be the results of the planned

projects? Veolia guarantees a significant

reduction in emissions within four

years. The partial gasification of the

heating plant will bring significant

emission reductions next year already.

‘The subsequent construction of a multifuel boiler and the use of biomass and

SAFs will then reduce CO2 emissions to

a minimum, by 80%, within four years.

Using a heat source outside the city

centres of Havířov and Karviná is another

great advantage’, remarks Tobola.

Stable heat price

The price of heating is very much linked

to the price of raw materials, which can

be very difficult to predict. In addition,

the availability and price of natural gas

is linked to a number of political aspects

which are currently changing very rapidly.

The invaluable advantage of Veolia's

solution is that it can adjust the fuel mix

based on the current situation so that

the heat price is favourable and stable

in the long term. ‘Thanks to the diversity

of our fuel base, we can guarantee

price stability for ecological heating in

Havířov and Karviná while maintaining

employment in the region’, emphasises

Tobola.

Grant support

The Ministry of the Environment has

already confirmed the allocation of

grants for the phasing out of coal in

heating plants in Karviná, Frýdek-Místek

and Kolín. Veolia Group will receive

hundreds of millions of crowns from the

Modernisation Fund, which will cover

part of the costs for the construction

of new technologies. The objective of

the support is to ensure the prioritised

and rapid transition of heating plants to

clean energy sources.

The fund offers EU Member States billions

of euros in investment to develop lowcarbon technologies, modernise energy

systems and improve energy efficiency.

Veolia is the first company in Central

and Eastern Europe to be approved for

a specific project from the fund.
