A Touch of the Alps in
the Moravian-Silesian Region
The Moravian-Silesian Region is one of only a few in Czechia that lie on the cusp of two significant
mountain ranges, the Beskid and Jeseník Mountains. This unique feature might have played a big
role when Austrian and Swiss businesses decided to settle here, spotting a similarity to the Alps
they enjoy at home.
Another testament to Czechia’s popularity among
Swiss and Austrian investors is the fact that they
regularly top the ranks of direct foreign investment.
In 2019, Austria ranked fourth and Switzerland sixth
on this list, adding up to a total of around 15% of all
foreign investment. Furthermore, we are the most
significant Austrian business partner in Central and
Eastern Europe. Both countries are also considerable
consumers of Czech products. In 2020 alone, a total
of 250bn CZK worth of goods were exported to
Austria and Switzerland, and this number could have
been even higher were it not for the pandemic.
Currently, dozens of Austrian and Swiss companies
operate from within the Moravian-Silesian Region,
spanning a wide range of fields. Perhaps one of the
longest-running companies in the region is the MayrMelnhof saw mill in Paskov, which has climbed to
become our most significant saw mill. It annually
processes up to 1.5 million m3 of spruce and produces
100,000 tons of pellets. It is also no coincidence that
the mill is based in Paskov, a location which allows
the mill to source its wood from sustainably managed
forests at the foothills of the Beskid and Jeseník
