Mountains. The company’s goal is to minimize waste
and so, for example, excess bark is burned in their
heating plant and byproducts, such as wood chips,
are put to good use by another Austrian company,
Lenzing Biocel Paskov, which draws these materials
directly from the Mayr-Melnhof processing area.
Lenzing Biocel uses these wood chips to produce
pulp, which is the first step in the production of woodbased textile fibers. Self-sufficiency is a core tenant
at Lenzing Biocel as well; its energy consumption
is directly covered by its own wood biomass-based
electrical plant and any excess is sold to the power
grid. This model is made possible mainly due to the
company’s strong emphasis on innovation. When it
comes to innovation, another top performer in the
region is the Swiss and Swedish technology company
ABB, which has operated in Czechia since 1992 and has
provided hundreds of jobs to people in Ostrava. This
number will grow by roughly another 120 employees
after their new production and development center for
robotics opens at the Mošnov industrial zone around
the middle of this year. A service center for industrial
robots will also be a part of this new installation—the
only one of its kind in Europe—as part of the web of
ABB global centers. Other noteworthy Austrian or
Swiss companies that operate within the region and
are considered significant local employers include
Semperflex Optimit in Odry, Modely Obaly in Opava
and Novogear in Frýdek-Místek.
Not only is our region linked with Austria and
Switzerland through successful economic cooperation,
but also a shared set of values and beautiful nature. In
this regard, there is ample potential for our cooperation
in the field of tourism, with which both Austria and
Switzerland have an expansive history of experience.
