the enthusiasm, support, and motivation
of all the teachers who believed in us from
the very beginning. The school gave us the
space to discover our full potential, to look
for our strengths and weaknesses, and not
to be afraid to ask questions and make
mistakes.
The 1st International School of Ostrava
offers an international education
program. How do you perceive
the benefits of this type of education
for students compared to the traditional
Czech system?
I don’t want to compare the Czech
education system, as my experience is
limited to elementary school. However,
this likely reflects my somewhat sceptical
view of the current education system.
I believe there isn't enough space devoted
to reforming and evolving education,
as is the case in countries like Denmark
or other Nordic nations.
The 1st ISO prepared me well for
university abroad, which required critical
thinking, alertness, but above all, my own
opinion supported by professional articles
and real-world examples rather than just
theory learned from books.
What values and principles do you try
to bring into the work environment
as a company manager, and how do you
shape the company culture?
Corporate culture is an important
motivational tool in all companies,
maintaining desirable values and
behaviour. It is essential for me that
employees are fair, decent, and respect
themselves as well as the company’s
internal rules. The fact that we are a family
company with more than 30 years
of tradition speaks to our success. We have
employees who have been with us for over
20 years. It’s also important for me that
I demand from customers or hotel guests
that they respect the employees and do
not behave inappropriately towards them.
In the age of digitalisation, reviews, and
hateful comments, people can say things
that I will not tolerate towards anyone in
the company. Balance is probably the key
word for our company culture.
What are the key skills for running
a company for you at the moment?
The most important and key skills for
me right now are organisation, effective
time management, vision, empathy,
and providing feedback with good
communication. Many skills are needed,
but it is essential to combine them and use
them at the right moment.
How do you manage to combine your
personal life and work life? What has
been the biggest challenge for you?
This is a very difficult question. I have two
daughters (2 and 4), and I don’t really
know what maternity or parental leave is.
On the other hand, I know I’m the type
who can't sit at home and do nothing.
I am extremely grateful for my supportive
family on both sides for their help. To make
matters more complicated, my husband is
a professional hockey player currently in
the DEL German League, so balancing
work and family life is sometimes quite
a challenge.
Barbora, thank you for the interview.
