Secondary

School

of Civil

Engineering

Opava and

Its Aims

SPŠ stavební Opava (Secondary

School of Civil Engineering

Opava) states in its long-term

strategy that it intends to be

the part of Industry 4.0. That

is the challenge accepted

by teachers who hand-inhand with students gradually

transform this idea into reality.

BIM, GIS, EVVO and English

classes are the four directions

of their focus.

The curriculum now includes BIM

(Building Information Modelling), i.e. an

information model of a building which

will soon become an indivisible part of

civil engineering jobs. It represents the

modern process to create and manage

projects, based on the principles of

an intelligent model. The model is an

information database of the construction

to be designed, made and operated for

all its lifetime. It facilitates the exchange

of information during the project

design, construction, and operation.

Students are introduced to cutting-edge

software serving BIM processes. Thanks

to the unified Building Information

Model, the data can be easily shared

by individual designer tools, team

collaboration is easier, and all data is

available throughout the operation of

the building. Our students have already

learnt differences between CAD and

BIM designs. When designing a building

with the BIM method, any changes

and alterations in the model appear in

all relevant sections of the project at

once, the data remain coordinated and

accurately describe the qualities of the

project to everyone in the designer

team and to the investors.

BIM is as important for civil engineers as

GIS (Geographic Information System) is for

geodesists. The Geographic Information

System is a framework for data collection,

management, and analysis. It analyses

locations in space and organizes layers of

information in visualizations through maps

and 3D sceneries. GIS is used in various

fields such as public administration,

utility network management, nature

preservation,

emergency

systems,

transport, smart communities, defence of

the state, etc.

Another part of education is environmental

education, especially in the spheres

where our graduates may influence the

impact of their jobs: heating technologies,

the efficient use of natural resources, and

waste management.

Professional training goes hand-in-hand

with the language skills of students and

teachers, vital for their professional

growth. This is why the school is focused

on language instruction and developing

the language skills of students and

teachers via methods such as lessons with

native speakers, stays abroad for students

and teachers, workshops with foreigners

held in English, seminars with an American

ambassador, and many others.

All our activities support systematic

professional cooperation and professional

dialogue between the school and

employers with particular emphasis on the

quality of education. We would have never

achieved our aims without the cooperation

of specialized businesses. We educate

active graduates, motivate our students

to participate in competitions announced

by businesses, the Ministry of Education,

Youth and Sports, and the government of

the Moravian-Silesian Region. They usually

succeed. Our students take internships

in businesses, attend many training

workshops, seminars and field trips.
