Experience, Try, Touch
Experiential learning and pedagogy are the fundamental approaches to modern education in
the 21st century. This approach enables students to learn with their hands on, it supports the
academic side of their studies and it develops the national curriculum within the area of the key
competences and soft skills which are required so much nowadays.
If we want to lead our students to
the positive development of their
personalities and skills, we cannot stand
in front of them and order them what to
think. Students need impulses in order to
develop their curiosity, they need space to
communicate, an opportunity to present,
a topic to be debated with their classmates
and teacher; they need a chance to show
their creativity.
And it is the experience which gives them
a chance to do things practically in the
real world. Every school subject, every
extracurricular activity or conceptual
experiential programme should contain
features of this pedagogy which brings
to students new and genuine challenges,
activities, goals, a connection with local
community and its needs, successes and
failures.
Experiential learning is one of the
fundamental pillars of teaching and learning
at the 1st International School of Ostrava.
Students often leave their comfort zone and
face various challenges out of the school,
either as part of their classes and subjects or
through programmes such as The Duke of
Edinburgh International Award.
This is how we build and develop soft skills
(communication, creativity, cooperation,
critical thinking and problem solving,
imagination, entrepreneurship) as well as
the key competencies (civic, social and
personal, learning competency), which
lead students to future successful studies
and getting a good job.
