BUSINESS
of the new console surgeon with the assistant to one
of the Case Observation Centres follows. There are
several centres of this kind in Europe, and Nový Jičín
Hospital (Nemocnice Nový Jičín a.s.) is one of them.
The surgeons themselves choose the centre where they
practise: in the Case Observation Centre, the trainee
robotic team observes actual surgical proceedings, with
step-by-step commentary. The final stage is (usually)
repetitive visits of the proctor in the department of the
new robotic colorectal team. Quite often the proctor
revisits this department after about ten independent
surgeries performed by the team to evaluate the
surgeon’s technique, and to suggest and recommend
some tips and tricks.
Robotic surgery is performed with the latest robotic
instrument da Vinci® Xi, the current leader among
robotic surgical instruments. Will you introduce this
fascinating system?
The robotic system da Vinci® Xi belongs to a family of
robotic instruments of the fourth generation. Unlike
previous generations, its enhanced scale of four
operational arms allows surgeries to be performed in
all quadrants of the abdominal cavity when docked.
The console surgeon therefore becomes a four-handed
surgeon. The ergonomics of the instruments allows
bending the end part, imitating the mobility of a human
wrist, facilitating very precise surgeries in a minimal
space, sensitive to neighbouring anatomical structures.
The system with its enhanced 3D HD optics and the
options to use cutting-edge surgical technologies has
considerably opened the range of implementations,
therefore a larger number of patients will potentially
benefit from what this modern mini-invasive surgical
technology has to offer.
The job of a surgeon is undoubtedly one of the most
demanding professions. Please tell us how you spend
your time off to relax. Where and how do you recharge
your batteries? What are your hobbies?
A surgeon’s work is extremely time-consuming, and it
also demands great physical and mental effort from
each and every responsible surgeon. My top priorities
include my family, of course. My wife Denisa is an
ophthalmologist, my daughter Lucia is in her sixth year
at the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry at Palacký
University (LF UP) in Olomouc, and Lívia is a student at
the bilingual grammar school in Žilina. With them I relax
and spend all the time which my demanding lover,
surgery, allows. I enjoy being with my extended family
and friends too, playing golf and going skiing. I am
also fond of history, numismatics, hunting, and good
literature.
Thank you for the interview.
