Bruntál Surprise, Surprise! What a pity to be in the Jeseník Mountains and not see the town of Bruntál. You might be surprised by the busy life and attractions of the gateway to the Jeseníky. Even the location of Bruntál is unique. This town of 17,000 is situated among the Hrubý Jeseník and Nízký Jeseník ranges, near the Slezská Harta dam. The television transmitter on the peak of Praděd, the top of which is the highest point in the Czech Republic, is only twenty kilometers away, with the banks of one of the largest and newest dams in the republic only five. This location makes Bruntál a target destination for all who love mountain hikes, water sports, cycling, skiing, but also lovers of history and fans of volcanology will find plenty to their interest, too. And that’s not all! Bruntál was the first town in the Lands of the Bohemian Crown to be granted town privileges, in the year 1213. This rich history is reflected in many sights, including the recently renewed town square with many historical burgher houses. The largest sight is the Castle of Bruntál with its triangular yard, arcades, huge collection of museums and astonishing park.
In the very heart of the town is the majestic Temple of the Ascension of Holy Virgin Mary, while at the edge of the town and visible from considerable distances can be found the Church of the Virgin Mary. Coming to this church, you can stroll along a four-lane linden tree alley with the Stations of the Cross until you reach the top of the Charcoal Burners Hill (Uhlířský vrch), a picturesque natural sight with a marvellous view of the area, and then along to another attraction, a quarry with a view of one of the youngest extinct volcanoes in the Czech Republic. The nearby Jeseník Mountains and Slezská Harta offer lots of opportunities for the town to develop services and leisure programmes, including a modern wellness centre. The town has a theatre, a state-ofart cinema with two screens, a renewed park, and a modern shopping mall. The children and youth of the town can choose from good quality kindergartens
and schools. Bruntál has three secondary schools: a general and sports grammar school, a vocational and secondary engineering school, and a business academy, with a background of latest technologies in transport, mechanical engineering, IT and language instruction. Bruntál has become an attractive centre for investors who build new plants, develop production, and considerably improve employment in the district. The town offers a few industrial zones dedicated to small-size production and production services, light industries, warehousing and distribution of goods. There are also brownfields to serve community amenities. Bruntál definitely offers everything necessary for a comfortable life, enterprise and tourism. You need to come and see… and let yourself enjoy the surprise.
