What Is the Biggest Myth About Hydrogen That You Would Like to Dispel?

nologie, dodržování pravidel a vyškolení lidé. Respekt
I consider the public perception that hydrogen is too
dangerous for everyday use to be a myth. Industry has
been working with hydrogen for decades and knows
how to handle it safely. As with other fuels, the key
is using the right technologies, following the rules
and having properly trained people. A healthy respect
is appropriate, but unnecessary fear should not stand
in the way of innovation.

CO
2
The problem lies in the very idea of replacing 42%
of the hydrogen currently used with green hydrogen,
which is illogical and lacks a coherent concept. Why
does the legislation not refer, for example, to blue or
pink hydrogen, which likewise do not generate CO
2
emissions? Under RED III, 42% of hydrogen used
in industry is to come from water electrolysis by 2030,
while other methods of reducing emissions are not
given any significant consideration by the EU.
Yet a techno-economic assessment shows that
electrolytically produced hydrogen would put final
products at such a competitive disadvantage that they
would become unsellable. Moreover, there will not
be enough green electricity available on the market
to support such a transformation of industry. Green
hydrogen should only be produced where sufficient
green energy is available and should serve as a means
of energy storage, rather than being produced simply
to meet a mandate without technical and economic
justification.

FÓRUM
Široká veřejnost z mého pohledu vodík nevnímá,
a když, tak jen tak, že bouchá. To jsme někteří viděli
„Hliník odstěhoval do Humpolce“.
budoucností dopravy a ukládání energie.
In my view, the general public does not really think much
about hydrogen, and when they do, they tend to associate
it simply with explosions. Some of us saw that in year
7 during a chemistry experiment, although I do not know
whether today’s curriculum even covers it. That is about all
I have to say about the myths surrounding hydrogen.
In reality, hydrogen is the future of energy storage.
Batteries have a limited capacity, and once that capacity
is exceeded, hydrogen is currently the only option
for storing that energy – and I believe this will remain
the case in the future. It simply is the future.
There was a similar situation in my industry 30 years ago,
when my motto was ‘Aluminium – the material of the future’.
Today, we cannot imagine life without aluminium, even
though one ‘Hliník moved to Humpolec’. (smiles)
With the use of fossil fuels being drastically reduced,
the combination of electric batteries and hydrogen fuel
cells represents the future of transport and energy storage.
