Interim Management May Be the Way Out of the Crisis

Interim Management May Be the Way Out of the Crisis

Věříte své zkušenosti, svým schopnostem rychle vyhodnotit situaci, připravit strategii a tu akcemi realizovat s lidmi, kteří vám věří. Je to obrovská zodpovědnost. Je to obrovská důvěra. Interim Management May Be the Way Out of the Crisis Over the past year, the word “crisis” has been used more commonly than we were previously used to. What kind of crisis are companies facing right now? Is COVID all that is to blame, or are the causes multifaceted and, often, deeper? And who can help us in this time of crisis? Interim managers are often a company owner’s guide through crises. For some, this is still a foreign term; to many, however, it is an invaluable service. Nowadays, company owners consider interim management to be a great pathway to access an expert’s experience and get their business out of any trouble in a short amount of time. greatest glory is never “ Ourbut in rising everynot inwe fall.falling, time Confucius. ” to the conclusion that the company was in a state of crisis even before COVID--the company was simply unaware, or the leaders did not want to admit it. COVID, then, simply exacerbated and accelerated the problems. This experience was not unique to me either, as many of my colleagues from CAIM (the Czech Association of Interim Management) have experienced much the same. In that case, what are the priorities of a company in this sort of state? Over the past year, I was invited to companies in order to tackle the crisis caused by COVID. It is quite a logical step, and in the beginning it was important to respond quickly-to build a crisis response team, set daily routines, establish communication throughout the company and solve issues as they come. Every tomorrow is vital in times of crisis; each day is a battle to be won. Any experienced interim manager will tell you that the most important step is to admit that the company is facing a crisis in time. The adoption of this mindset within the management and owners then works as the foundation for any further action. This is not easy for them, but that is exactly where the unbiased assessment of an interim manager is of great help--looking at the company through an objective lens. Thus, crisis resolution often evolves into transformation, process revision, establishing new business models, replacing management, or acquisitions. After the worst is over, an interim manager can start to examine the inner workings of the company, each individual process, to evaluate the company’s state in depth and pinpoint the cause of the crisis. I was surprised to find out that the common denominator to some roots of the issues in companies was not, in fact, COVID, but the long term neglect of problems. In some cases, we later came This is what makes interim management beautiful and exciting: you enter into a new environment and you have no way of knowing what awaits you there. You trust in your experience and ability to quickly assess the situation, prepare a strategy and then enact that approach with the people that believe in you. It is a great responsibility and involves even greater trust. Text: Radka Šušková Foto: Martina Rokosová POSITIV 1/2021 ǀ 29
