Technology in the Fight to Save Lives and Property. What Helps Firefighters in Action

TECHNOLOGY | TECH+
pamatovali?
Já bych osobně vzkázal to, že jestli vás
to baví, jděte za tím. Na 1
st
Určitě cestujte, poznávejte a komunikujte.
Technology in the Fight to Save
Lives and Property. What Helps
Fireghters in Acon
Being a reghter is not only about courage and physical strength – today, the job is increasingly
shaped by modern technology. Drones, thermal cameras and hazardous substance sensors
changing emergency intervenons in the eld. But how does the knowledge gained at the
1
st
Internaonal School of Ostrava (1
st
ISO) translate into the daily work of a reghter?
In this interview, Bruno Šimek oers a personal perspecve of a young reghter who shows that
technology and humanity walk hand in hand.
What role do modern technologies play
in the everyday work of a firefighter,
and which technological skills gained
during your studies have helped you
most in your current profession?
Modern technologies play a very
significant role in the daily work
of a firefighter, whether it is operating
radios, thermal cameras or the breathing
apparatus itself. Technology in firefighting
evolves rapidly. There are constant
improvements and innovations in the
equipment, and every firefighter must
be able to use them properly.
We use special devices to measure
hazardous substances and gases, hydraulic
rescue tools, and pneumatic lifting bags.
The range is very wide, and all these
tools – which are continuously increasing
in number – help firefighters manage
interventions much more effectively
than ever before. During my studies,
understanding how these devices work
was a great advantage.
Could you describe how your idea
of being a firefighter differed from reality,
and how your studies at 1
st
ISO helped
you prepare for unexpected challenges?
My idea doesn’t really differ much from
reality. As a student firefighter doing
practical training here in Ostrava, I gained
a clear sense of how a shift works and I was
genuinely interested in it. So I knew
what I was getting into, and I’m glad
it turned out just as I imagined. Studying
at 1
st
ISO mainly helped me improve
my English and technical terminology.
During various training sessions, manuals
are sometimes available only in English,
and thanks to the school I have no trouble
with that. Because of my language skills,
I can also communicate to firefighters
all over the world. Whenever I travel
abroad, I make a point of visiting local
fire stations, where we share experiences
about how things work in different places.
It’s wonderful to be able to connect
everywhere and to realise that firefighters
are the same all around the world.
At school, you were interested
in physics. How do you apply this
knowledge and these skills in your
current role, for example, when using
specialised equipment?
Yes, as our former teacher used to say:
“Physics is all around us.” For example,
when working with a thermal camera.
At 1
st
ISO, we were able to carry out
different experiments, some even
related to firefighting, and I remember
them fondly. Those experiences helped
me better imagine how to work with these
devices today.
