u nás začíná seriózně mluvit i o malých
modulárních reaktorech. My nejsme země
se slunečními nebo větrnými podmínkami
jako Španělsko či Dánsko. Budoucnost
naší energetiky bude stát na jádru a plynu
– a jsem přesvědčený, že tomu tak bude
ještě za mého života.
Jak podle vás umělá inteligence ovlivní
společnost a průmysl?
V průmyslu je využití umělé inteligence
neuvěřitelné. AI dokáže v řádu minut
shrnout informace, na které by člověk po-
třeboval týdny. V byznyse ji přirovnávám
k novému Klondiku. Máme nové území,
které se právě otevírá, a každý má mož-
nost si z něho „urvat“ svůj kus. V průmyslu
už funguje při kontrole kvality výroby, umí
se učit z chyb, umí automatizovat spoustu
rutinních činností, a tím šetří čas i náklady.
Obrovský potenciál má i ve zdravotnic-
tví – v diagnostice, v porovnávání dat, ve
schopnosti analyzovat komplexní zdravot-
ní záznamy. To všechno nás může posu-
nout dramaticky dopředu.
Od června jste generálním ředitelem
holdingu a podepsali jste memorandum
s VŠB–TU Ostrava. Jak vnímáte
propojení vzdělání a praxe?
Loni jsem navštívil Boston a v sousedním
Cambridge také Innovation Centre a MIT
– technicky nejrespektovanější univerzitu
na světě. Poznal jsem jejich dokonalé pro-
pojení s byznysem. Každá aktivita v labo-
ratoři je sledována, jestli nemá komerční
potenciál. Mají desítky zaměstnanců,
jejichž jediným úkolem je hodnotit, jestli
z vědecké práce nevznikne něco, co lze
uplatnit v praxi. Díky tomu vznikají spin-
-offy a úspěšné firmy, a i pedagogové se
nebojí podnikat.
U nás se situace zlepšuje, ale stále převlá-
dá spíše teoretický přístup. Přitom vzdě-
lání má mít praktický dopad. Technické
univerzity – třeba ta ostravská – udělaly
velký pokrok, ale systém by měl být více
nastavený na to, že idea má přinést hod-
notu, nejen poznání.

Czech industry is in the midst of a dicult transformaon – companies are undergoing
a generaonal handover, burdened by high energy costs and EU regulatory pressure, while
geopolics is shiing the economic centre gravitates towards Asia. Jan Rafaj, President of the
Confederaon of Industry and Transport, rejects the “small country mentality” and reminds
us that the Czech Republic is capable of pushing through changes in the EU – from easing quotas
on electromobility to taking a realisc approach to climate targets. He sees the future in nuclear
energy (with gas as a transional soluon) and in a smart reform of energy pricing, while calling
arcial intelligence a new “Klondike” that could signicantly boost producvity and innovaon.
The Confederation of Industry is a key
player in the Czech economy. At present,
however, industry is struggling with
decline in some sectors and a degree
of stagnation. How would you assess its
current state?
Czech industry is undergoing a logical,
yet demanding transformation, shaped
by several factors. One of them is a
significant generational change – most
companies were founded or transformed
from former state enterprises 35 years
ago. Back then, their founders were
in their thirties or forties; today they are 65
to 80 years old and are beginning to hand
over management to their successors.
This is one of the most visible shifts
we currently observe in Czech industry.
On top of this, we face other
European challenges – expensive
energy, an inflexible labour market
and overregulation. And then there are
geopolitical pressures: tariff wars initiated
by President Trump or the shift of the
economic centre of gravity from the West
to Asia.
We often hear that as a “small country”
we have no chance of influencing
European policy. Is it true?
It isn’t. Czechs have somehow imposed
this small-country model on themselves.
