památkami. Daří se Vám tyto prostory

postupně renovovat?

Konkrétním příkladem renovace původních objektů je aktuální sídlo Chráněného bydlení a dílen Charity sv. Alexandra.

Nachází se v areálu bývalého Dolu Alexandr v Ostravě-Kunčičkách a jsou památkově chráněny. Od roku 2001, kdy Charita

sv. Alexandra vznikla, do roku 2008 získala postupně 3 zdevastované objekty.

Kovárnu, zrekonstruovala na textilní dílnu,

humanitární šatník a zázemí společnosti; kočárovnu, opravila na chráněné dílny a kotelnu; a správní budovu, opravila

na chráněné bydlení pro zdravotně znevýhodněné. S financováním tak rozsáhlého

projektu pomohly z větší části evropské

fondy a dále granty a nadace.

Helping Not Just Around Christmas

The aim of Charita is to offer the church service of merciful love to people in danger or need regardless

of age, gender, political views, family, health, sexual preferences, social and economic status, ethnicity

and nationality, religion and culture. The organization works through social, health and other services.

Here is the interview on the help, support and activities of Charita of the Czech Republic with

Mr Lukáš Curylo, CEO of Charita of the Czech Republic and CEO of Charita of the Diocese

of Ostrava and Opava.

Mr Curylo, the mission of Charita is

to help those in need not only during

Christmastime. In which ways can we keep

helping in our region?

Charita offers helping hands to all in need

regardless of their faith, origin, or nationality.

In the Czech Republic there are over 300

Charita branches looking after over 145

,000 people annually. In the MoravianSilesian Region and part of the Jeseníky

Mountain Region, where Charita of the

Diocese of Ostrava and Opava (Diecézní

charita

ostravsko-opavská)

operates

eighteen Charities, there are over 168

facilities providing thirty types of healthsocial services, which makes us the greatest

non-governmental provider of health and

social services in the region.

One of our mottos is “Anybody can help”

no matter if it is through spiritual, material

or financial means. Help can be in the form

of a student who volunteers at a seniors’

home, a mother who donates clothes

to a family in dire straits, or a young couple

who send money to support a particular

charity project. At the start of winter each

of us can remember the homeless: an

opportunity to spend a night in a warm place

may save their lives. For example, Nový Jičín

offers “Zetko”, a voucher you can sponsor,

for 50CZK, to pay for one person a night

in a shelter or a doss-house.

Traditional activities of Charita include

Twelfth Night Charity Collection (Tříkrálová

sbírka). Where does the money go from

there?

In 2020, the Twelfth Night Charity

Collection will have been held for twenty

years. In that time, the contributions have

supported thousands of charity projects.

65% of what donors put in Charita’s

collection boxes remains at the local

Charita, who organize the collection. 15%

is allocated to the Charita of the Diocese,

10% helps the people abroad in need, 5%

supports national projects, and 5% goes

to the running costs of the collection.

In 2019, donations allowed us to buy

two cars to improve the jobs of nurses

of Charita in Opava who travel over

25,000 kilometres monthly when visiting

clients. The full list of the Twelfth Night

Charity Collection spendings is available

Heritage Buildings. How do you manage

upkeep?

A good example of renovation is the current

Sheltered Home and Workshop of the

Charity of St. Alexander. It is situated in the

former Alexander Mine in Ostrava–Kunčičky

at the National Heritage Buildings. From the

foundation of the Charity of St. Alexander

in 2001 to 2008 the Charity acquired three

badly damaged buildings. The smithy was

turned into a textile workshop, humanitarian

clothes store and charity offices; the coach

house into a sheltered workshop and boilerroom; and the administration headquarters

were renewed to provide sheltered housing

to the disabled. The large project was

co-financed mostly through funds of the EU

and also through grants and endowments.

Another fine illustration of salvaged

buildings in the region is the premises at the

Church of St. Nicolas (kostel sv. Mikuláše)

in Ludgeřovice. That renovation provided

a Charity Home of St. Nicolas (Domov

sv. Mikuláše), housing for seniors who

cannot stay in their homes any more. The

service is operated by Charita Hlučín.

Charita ČR often operates from interesting

facilities, some of them listed as National
