LAKE MALAWI:
Delivering a Star Performance from Třinec
Albert Černý, singer and songwriter, is frontman for Lake Malawi, a Czech indie-pop band.
He earned a reputation for talent and perceptive songwriting with his former band, Charlie Straight
(2006–2013). He attended the Polish Elementary School and Czech Grammar School in Třinec,
then studied English Translation and Interpreting. He won four Angel Music Awards (Anděl), the
Czechoslovak MTV Award and Czech Nightingale Award as the Star of the Internet (Český Slavík
Hvězda internetu). In 2014, Lake Malawi released an EP entitled We Are Making Love Again, followed
with the 2017 album Surrounded by Light. Their most played songs include “Paris”, “Chinese Trees”,
and “Friend Of A Friend”. Lake Malawi’s line-up includes Jeroným Šubrt (bass) and Antonín Hrabal
(drums). The band has played over 300 shows in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, Austria, and
Great Britain. In the 2019 Eurovision Song Contest, the band won the national round in January
with the song “Friend Of A Friend”, co-written by Albert Černý. In May, they represented the Czech
Republic at the Eurovision finals in Israel, eventually placing 11th in the great competition.
